KATU News visited Auburn Elementary School yesterday for the first full day of classes during the 2021-22 school year. Reporter Nikki Torres interviewed Superintendent Christy Perry and Principal Katie Shumway about plans to keep everyone safe as the school gets underway.

SALEM, Ore. — More than 41,000 students in the Salem-Keizer School District are set to head back into the classroom for full-time in person learning on Wednesday.

Students and staff are required to wear a mask. However, the district says kids can ask their teacher if they can take off their mask for a short time away from others if they need a break.

Teachers and staff in the district say they plan to focus on care and connection for the first few weeks of the school year. Their goal is to make the transition back to full-time, in-person learning as smooth as possible…
